David Urban (CZE)

Police investigator and author

David has been working at the Prague police all his life, and in recent years has been using his knowledge of the field to write crime stories and novels — very successfully. One of his novels, Hra o přežití (The Survival Game), won the prestigious Jiří Marek Award and was nominated for the Magnesia Litera Award in the Detective Story of the Year category.

David is a native of Prague. He is happily married with two grown-up children and a couple of cats. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and Penitentiary Care from the Technical University of Liberec. He started with the police in the local uniformed department, then moved to the crime lab where he spent most of his time looking for missing or wanted people, from which he bounced around for eight years to experience working on the beat before returning to search again two years ago. In 2024, he was awarded the Specialist of the Year award, given by the Head of the Regional Directorate of Prague for his excellent results in searching for stolen objects of cultural and historical value.

In 2016, he began writing short stories — initially in the categories of science fiction, fantasy, horror and history. He won several awards in literary competitions, and started writing books in 2020.
Outside of work, he enjoys reading books and comics, playing games, climbing walls, cycling and archery.
