Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

 

Petr Fiala is a Czech politician, political scientist and university lecturer, he has been Prime Minister of the Czech Republic since November 2021.

 

 

He studied Czech language and history at the University of Brno, then worked as a historian in a museum. In the 1980s he participated in independent civic activities against the communist dictatorship. After November 1989, he founded the field of political science. He was, among others, head of the Department of Political Science and the Department of International Relations and European Studies, director of the International Institute of Political Science, director of the Institute for Comparative Political Research and dean of the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University.
As Rector, he led Masaryk University for two terms, which at that time became the most sought-after Czech university and an important Central European educational and research institution. Under his leadership, the MU Campus, one of the largest higher education buildings in Central and Eastern Europe, was built and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) project was promoted. He has been active in institutions and bodies dealing with higher education and research in the Czech Republic and abroad for many years, and was also the chairman of the Czech Rectors Conference. He has held a number of public and professional positions, for example, he was a member of the Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, the Accreditation Commission, Vice-Chairman of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation, and served as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister.
His academic work specializes in comparative political science, European politics and conservative political thought. He is the author of more than 20 books and 300 academic studies published in this country and abroad.
In 2012-2013, he was the Minister of Education in the government of Petr Nečas; he managed to stabilize the ministry and quickly gained public trust with his conceptual and convincing work.
Petr Fiala was appointed Prime Minister on 28 November 2021 and the members of his government were appointed on 17 December 2021.
