Josef Šimůnek (CZE)

Mountaineer

 

A mountain leader who knows the sand, the ice and the mountains. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University, majoring in Geodesy-Cartography. He tried hang gliding, judo and many other things until he became enchanted with climbing rocks.

 

 

He has made 15 expeditions to the eight-thousanders without the use of oxygen, since 1995 as an expedition leader. He has worked on Cho Oyu (1993, 2006, 2011), Dhaulagiri (1994, 2021), Shisha Pangma (1995, 2003, 2007), Manaslu (1996), Makalu (1998), Lhoka (1999), Kanchenjunga (2000), K2 (2001) and Mount Everest (2005, 2022).
In 1998, he co-founded the Czech Association of Mountain Guides which was admitted to the international UIAGM in 2006. Josef remains its chairman. He guides his clients on all continents, and co-organizes the Banff World Tour mountain film festival in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
