At the age of 21, he lost his left leg after a car accident. Already at the hospital, he began to consider playing volleyball for the handicapped. And the handicap is just a small word for this big man. Michal Vápenka aka Vápno represented the Czech Republic at the Paralympics in Atlanta in volleyball only two years later.
There is not a sports discipline he would not do. He even played regular floorball for several years. Thanks to this sport he worked his way to para hockey. And he wore the goalkeeper outfit for the first time at the age of thirty. He has been an essential member of the Czech para hockey team for fifteen years. He shares his time between family, sport and work. After the World Championship he started to work as a service technician of rehabilitation aids and wheelchairs.
