A knight of Czech medicine and a longtime head of the Department of Pathology of Thomayer Hospital in Prague, whose face and voice are familiar to wide public. František Koukolík is a renowned Czech neuropathologist and winner of several awards, including the Academy of Sciences Award for the popularization of science. His name has even crossed the Earth‘s atmosphere, carried by the asteroid 10213 1997 RK7.
Before he got political permission to study, František began working manually at the Czech Shipyard, which he now considers a very valuable experience. He received a degree in pathology at the Faculty of General Medicine at Charles University, and later on in surgery. He focuses on neurodegenerative brain diseases and the relationship between the brain and behavior. Neuropathology became his main discipline after a patient with a diagnosed memory loss died in 1974 and her autopsy confirmed a brain tumor. For thirty years, František was the head physician of the Pathology Department of Thomayer Hospital in Prague.
He has written a number of scientific essays and books for professionals and the lay public who like his engaged and kind approach to the interpretation of neuropathological phenomena. He focuses on the relationship between brain damage and mental function, often talking about psychopathy and sociopathy. He lectures at universities and does not hesitate to comment on topics beyond his discipline.
In addition to lectures, he contributes to TV and radio broadcasts and to the press. He has won several scientific awards. In 2018, he was appointed the 24 th Knight of the Czech Medical State.
