Lecture in language
From her native Nigeria via London, Cambridge, New York, Paris, Budapest and Berlin to Prague – this is how one could describe the journey of one of the most acclaimed contemporary British novelists, who has been living in the Czech Republic since 2014. It's her longest period spent in one place so far, and we don't blame her for her choice. Her literary journey, however, is even more colourful.
Helen is the author of seven novels, for which she has already won numerous literary awards. She is often classed as a magical realist, but how accurate that label is, is for each reader to judge. Her stories intertwine real and unreal elements, disturbing plot twists, and complex emotions. Her first novel, The Icarus Girl, was published in high school, when she was eighteen. While studying political science at Cambridge University, she celebrated success with two plays that were eventually published as books. Readers may know her novels Boy, Snow, Bird, or Gingerbread, among others, that were translated into Czech.
