Alexandr has been active on the political scene for many years. He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2019 and the Vice-Chairman of the ODS (Civic Democratic Party) since 2020.
He was involved in dissent activities from the first half of the 1980s. In the spring of 1990, he initiated a meeting of intellectuals and top representatives of Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland in Bratislava, which subsequently led to the Visegrad cooperation. He was at the birth of Czech foreign policy, led the team that negotiated a joint declaration with Germany and initiated accession talks on the Czech Republic's entry into NATO. A lifelong Atlanticist, Alexandr lectured on Czech-American relations and served as President of the Czech Euro-Atlantic Council.
In 2006, he served for several months as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and between 2010 and 2012 as Minister of Defence. He prepared the Czech EU Presidency in 2009.
Alexandr has received various foreign awards for his work in favour of human rights, democracy and international understanding (the US National Endowment for Democracy Medal, awards in Poland and Latvia, the Meritorious Cross of the Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic, the Medal for Diplomacy from the Czech Foreign Minister and the Meritorious Service Medal of the Secretary General of NATO).
In the European Parliament, he is a member of the ENVI Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He is also a member of the delegation for relations with the United States and an alternate member of the delegation for relations with Israel. He takes an active interest in both countries and likes them.
