A World-class guitarist and composer, professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. This year it has been just 20 years since Štěpán Rak was named the first ever university professor of guitar in the Czech Republic by President Václav Havel. He wins hearts of his listeners by the intensity of experience, the interpretive mastery and the absolute fusion of the artist and the composer in one person with the soul of music.
During his studies of guitar and compositions at the Prague Conservatory, Štěpán received important awards and began to teach guitar. He founded the guitar department at the Conservatory of Central Finland, where he worked as a professor until 1980. He then returned to Czechoslovakia and became a professor at the State Conservatory of Music in Prague. He founded the guitar section at the Musical Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
With his guitar he traveled 74 countries on 4 continents including Greenland and New Zealand. He often performs with his son Jan-Matěj Rak, also a brilliant guitarist, or with a renowned Czech actor Alfred Strejček with whom he created a musical performance called Vivat Comenius, for which they also received a special UNESCO award.
Štěpán's compositions are being released all over the world and played by such stars as John Williams, Vladimír Mikulka, Sergio Assad, Prague Guitar Quartet, Wihan Quartet, Duo Siempre Nuevo and many others. At the Omiš Guitar Fest 2020, Štěpán has been ranked among the 10 most important guitar composers of today. He still acts as a juror in various professional guitar competitions around the world.
