Jan Lata is Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Ostrava. His international experience include long-term residencies in France (Université de Bourgogne, Dijon; Service d’Hépatologie, Clichy; Hôpital Saint-Antoine, Paris) and the USA (Clinical Center for Liver Diseases, Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas).
Until 2010 he was employed at the University Hospital Brno where he headed the Department of Internal Gastroenterology for several years and at Masaryk University, Brno, also serving as the Vice-Dean for External Relations. He moved to the University of Ostrava after the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine; he served as the Vice-Rector for Research and External Relations, and he has been the Rector of the University since 2015.
Professor Lata has over 100 publications to his name, mainly in the fields of hepatology, portal hypertension and infectious complications of liver cirrhosis. He has authored or co-authored 10 monographs. He has received numerous awards, including the Czech Hepatological Society’s award for the best publication in the field of hepatology. He has been a member of the Czech Hepatological Society’s committee for many years. He has also served on the committee of the Czech Gastroenterological Society. In November 2016 the Czech Republic government appointed him a member of the Research, Development and Innovation Council (advisory body of the government). He is currently Vice-President for creative activities of the Czech Rectors Conference and member of the EUA Research Policy Working Group.
