Etzler studied at the Faculty of Education in Ostrava and television journalism at the University of Colorado. In the period 1999–2006 he worked as an editor, producer and reporter for CNN in Atlanta, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and Germany. From 2007 to 2013 he was a reporter for Czech Television in Beijing. From China and the surrounding countries he prepared almost five hundred reports or live inputs. He reported for example on the apprehension of the terrorist Osama Bin Laden directly from the house in Pakistan’s Abbottabad where this sought after criminal was killed by American commandos. He was the first Czech journalist to receive an Emmy award, for the use of the satellite broadcasting technology BGAN, which makes possible mobile live broadcasts without a transmission vehicle.
