Dan Shechtman

2011 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry

Dan Shechtman is an Israeli materials scientist whose expertise lies in materials and their structures. In the 1980s, Shechtman discovered quasicrystals. This discovery was initially very controversial in the scientific community because it required scientists to rethink their entire conception of the nature of matter. Eventually, scientists did come around to find that Shechtman’s research proved true. In 2011, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for fundamentally altering how scientists perceive solid matter.
